Advance Care Planning isn't giving up: It's one of the greatest gifts we can give.

There is a common misconception that planning for future care means expecting the worst or somehow "giving up" or "giving control away". In reality, the opposite is true.

Advance care planning is not about losing hope. It is about protecting choice, preserving dignity and ensuring people we love understand our wishes before a crisis forces difficult decisions.

Recently I cam across a thought provoking article in the Dementia Times which shared a powerful reminder that many families delay important conversations about the "what if" because they feel uncomfortable. When a health crisis arrives out of the blue, those conversations become far more difficult.

The Cost of Waiting

As a professional supporting our elderly relatives, vulnerable people and their families, I see this regularly.

A sudden hospital admission. A diagnosis that changes everything. A family trying to make decisions without knowing what their loved one would have wanted.

The reality is that when plans are not in place, systems often make decisions based on available information and standard procedures. Families can find themselves navigating medical, legal and care decisions during some of the most stressful moments of their lives.

None of us know what tomorrow will bring, but we can take steps today to make tomorrow a little easier.

Planning Ahead Is an Act of Care

Advance care planning is not just about documents. It is about conversations. It is about asking:

  • What matters most to me?

  • Who do I trust to speak on my behalf?

  • What would I want if I could no longer communicate my wishes?

  • How can I make things easier for my family?

These discussions can be challenging, but they are often a profound act of kindness. They remove uncertainty and give loved ones confidence that they are making decisions that reflect our values and wishes.

More Than Just Paperwork

Many people assume that planning ahead simply means making a Will. While Wills are important, there are several other areas families should consider:

  • Lasting Powers of Attorney

  • Care preferences

  • Financial arrangements

  • Medical wishes

  • Important personal information and documents

  • Emergency contacts and support networks

Having these elements organised and accessible can help avoid unnecessary stress when families need information the most.

Within TarkaX Safeharbour, we encourage people to have these conversations long before they become urgent. Our internal resources on Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney, Care Planning highlight the importance of discussing future wishes before capacity becomes an issue and ensuring trusted people are equipped to make decisions when needed.

Why Families Avoid the Conversation

The reasons are understandable. People worry about upsetting loved ones. They fear discussing illness, incapacity or death. Some believe there will always be more time. Yet avoiding the conversation does not prevent future challenges. It simply postpones them.

In many cases, families tell us they wish they had talked sooner. Once a person loses the ability to express their wishes, options can become more limited and decisions more complex.

A Better Way Forward

Rather than viewing advance care planning as planning for the end of life, perhaps we should view it as planning for peace of mind.

It is about:

  • Maintaining independent for as long as possible

  • Protecting personal choice

  • Reducing uncertainty for loved one

  • Supporting better decision making

  • Avoiding unnecessary crises

  • Creating confidence for the future

  • At its heart, advance care planning is about ensuring that our voice continues to be heard, even when we may no longer be able to speak for ourselves.

Final Thoughts

One of the most valuable things we can leave our families is clarity. Not just financial security or legal documents, but the reassurance that they understand our wishes and can act with confidence if the need arises. Planning ahead is not pessimistic. It is practical. It is compassionate.

And perhaps most importantly, it is one of the greatest gifts we can give to the people we love.
