More Than a Wellbeing Visit: Elderly Couple Protected from Sophisticated Banking Scam

How Regular Visits Helped Protect a Vulnerable Couple from a Sophisticated Banking Scam

At Tarka X SafeHarbour, our wellbeing visits are about far more than a friendly chat and a welfare check. Sometimes, simply being there at the right moment can make a critical difference.

This week, during one of our regular social and wellbeing visits, we arrived to find a long-standing client couple, whom we'll call Mr & Mrs C, visibly anxious, upset and worried.

After taking the time to sit down and talk with them, it quickly became clear that they had become victims of a sophisticated bank impersonation scam.

"We're from the Bank's Fraud Team"

The previous day, Mr & Mrs C had received a telephone call from individuals claiming to be from their bank's fraud department.

The callers told them that a large suspicious transaction had been detected on their account and that the bank had stopped it. Naturally concerned, Mr & Mrs C confirmed they knew nothing about the transaction.

The scammers then convinced them to continue the conversation via a WhatsApp call.

With many high street bank branches now closed and banking services becoming increasingly digital, Mr & Mrs C believed this was simply a modern way for banks to communicate with customers.

Over the next four hours, the scammers gained their trust and persuaded them to:

  • Share photographs of the back of their debit cards.

  • Log out of their online banking applications.

  • Share their mobile screens while logging back in.

  • Provide information that gave the criminals access to sensitive banking details.

  • Download software that ultimately left malware installed on their mobile devices.

By the end of the call, the couple were extremely worried but weren't entirely sure what had happened.

Spotting That Something Wasn't Right

One of the biggest benefits of regular wellbeing visits is that we get to know our clients.

When we arrived, it was immediately obvious that something was wrong. Mr & Mrs C appeared distressed and unusually anxious.

Because we noticed the change in their wellbeing, we were able to start a conversation and uncover what had happened before the situation deteriorated further.

Immediate Action

With Mr & Mrs C present, we immediately contacted their bank using official telephone numbers obtained from genuine bank correspondence and the bank's official website.

We then worked directly with the bank's genuine fraud team for over three hours to secure the couple's accounts.

The actions taken included:

✅ Cancelling compromised debit cards

✅ Ordering replacement cards and PIN numbers

✅ Changing online and mobile banking usernames and passwords

✅ Securing internet banking access

✅ Reviewing suspicious transactions

✅ Removing malware from affected devices

✅ Factory resetting mobile phones where necessary

✅ Providing reassurance and practical guidance throughout the process

The Financial Impact Could Have Been Significant

During our discussions with the fraud team, it became apparent that the scammers had already attempted to make approximately £7,000 worth of purchases.

They had also signed the clients up for around £700 per month in recurring subscription payments.

Without intervention, the financial consequences could have been substantial.

Why Criminals Are So Successful

Modern scammers are highly organised and extremely convincing.

They often:

  • Create a sense of urgency.

  • Pretend to be trusted organisations.

  • Use technology that makes calls appear legitimate.

  • Exploit fears about fraud and account security.

  • Target older and vulnerable individuals who may be less familiar with modern fraud techniques.

Unfortunately, anyone can become a victim.

These scams are designed by professionals whose sole purpose is to gain trust and access to personal information.

More Than a Wellbeing Visit

This incident highlights why regular social and wellbeing visits can be so valuable.

For many people, especially those living independently, there may not be anyone regularly checking in, spotting changes in behaviour or helping when unexpected issues arise.

Our role is not just companionship.

It's about providing reassurance, practical support, safeguarding awareness, and an extra pair of eyes when things don't seem right.

In this case, a routine visit helped:

  • Identify a serious fraud incident.

  • Prevent further financial losses.

  • Restore banking security.

  • Remove malicious software.

  • Reduce anxiety and stress.

  • Give clients confidence and peace of mind.

A Reminder for Everyone

If someone claiming to be from your bank asks you to:

❌ Share card details

❌ Download software

❌ Share your screen

❌ Move money to a "safe account"

❌ Continue the conversation via WhatsApp or another messaging platform

Stop and contact your bank using a number you trust from their official website or bank statement.
