The single phone call that blindsides families every week
If you are currently balancing a busy working life while keeping a watchful eye on aging parents, you are in the right place.
In my 30 years of looking after families across England, I have noticed a heartbreaking pattern. Most people only find out how the elder care and legal systems actually work after a sudden crisis occurs - usually when a hospital discharge coordinator or a local authority social worker calls out of the blue, on a Friday afternoon, to demand immediate attention. But, it isn't always a big crisis. Sometimes it's something smaller a memory slip, a hospital appointment or forgetting medication. Suddenly things feel more serious than expected.

And in that moment, everything changes. Questions start to appear that no-one has asked before:
who can make decisions?
what happens if things get worse?
are we doing this the right way?
By this point, families are exhausted, terrified of losing the family home to care fees and completely overwhelmed by bureaucracy. These are good people, doing their best for their family, often without clear information, and often under pressure.
As the Family Care Coach and Mentor at TarkaX Safeharbour, my mission with this newsletter is simple: to give you your confidence back.
No stuffy legal jargon, no corporate boardroom speak and absolutely no hard sales pitches. Just honest, plain English guidance over a virtual or physical cup of tea to help you understand your rights, protect your parents or your choices, and stay in total control of the journey ahead.
In this weekly space, we are going to unpack the things people rarely volunteer to tell you, including:
why rely of the myth of "next of kin" as a ticking time bomb for your parents' bank accounts
wills and planning ahead
lasting powers of attorney
Mental capacity and safeguarding
how local authority means testing for care home funding actually works
how to unlock "hidden" state funding pots like NHS Continuing Healthcare
Along the way I'll share what we see on the ground - because often its those real situations that help things make sense.
Whether you are a worried son or daughter, a independent financial adviser looking to safeguard your clients, or a care home manager upskilling your front line team - I am incredibly glad you are here.
Let's take the mystery out of the care maze, together. You don't need all the answers right now but understanding the next step can make all the difference.
Thank you for reading
